Alcoholism and depression are closely related, and they tend to go hand-in-hand more often than not. For the best results, both conditions need to be treated at the same time. Many depression medications can be taken only if the person is not drinking, but it is hard for someone to stop drinking when they are depressed. Withdrawal symptoms from alcoholism can worsen depression, but if the depression is managed, then with outside support the alcoholic can recover.
