Whenever a drug user reaches the point in his or her life where the alcohol and/or drug addiction has taken over, it is common for the addict to still be unable to admit they have a problem or to ask their family for help. Usually, this is a critical time for a family intervention to be conducted in order to help the loved one reach a decision to want to attempt to combat his or her drug addiction. It is possible for a family to conduct an intervention without outside help. The other option, which is sometimes more successful, is to have a professional intervention counselor help with the intervention. When done properly, both approaches can succeed.

An intervention is a carefully planned process that may take place over the course of two or three days, depending on how difficult the situation is. Usually, the first day will be spent planning the intervention. It involves planning out such things as where the intervention will take, place, who will be involved, and what treatment center the loved one will be going to. When determining where the intervention should take place, the best thing to do is choose an area that the addict feels comfortable being in.

If the location is a place that the person recognizes and feels comfortable in, the intervention process will go much smoother. When determining who should be present at the intervention, it is critical to not have anyone there who the addict does not respect or who make them angry. If there are going to be people present at the intervention that the addict does respect or look up to, then it will increase the chances of the family having the addict actually listen to what people are saying. Another extremely important aspect of the intervention is to line up a treatment center in advance, and if necessary pay for it, so that when the addict agrees to treatment everything is ready. If arrangements for a treatment center are not made ahead of time before the intervention takes place, then it will reduce the chances of the family succeeding in getting the addict into treatment.

When an intervention is being conducted, the most common approach that is taken is, ‘we love you and won’t ever stop loving, but we aren’t willing to stand by and continue watching you kill yourself through taking drugs.’ There are some situations where the addict refuses to get help and won’t accept what is being offered by their family. In those cases, the family will need to turn to their intervention’s plan ‘B.’ The tough love approach will need to be taken so that the addict realizes that treatment is their only option. The family needs to be prepared to cut all of their support off. That includes all offers of financial support, living arrangements, and all other forms of assistance. Offer only treatment to the addict and absolutely nothing else. Although that is a very hard thing to do, at times it is the only option that a family will have available to them. An intervention professional can help with the process. Always keep in mind that a family never stops loving the individual who is battling a drug addiction, however, it is okay to oppose what they are doing to themselves.

Generally speaking, an intervention’s timing is critical and must be planned. However, an addict’s life also tends to be quite unstable, so there are often opportunities that arise.

What Is The Overall Message In An Intervention?

The tone of an intervention should show concern. The intention must be unwavering and clear.

The message is we love you, we always have loved you, and we won’t ever stop loving you but we all are not willing to just stand by while you are killing yourself on drugs.

Family members definitely should express concern for the addict but not sympathize. Sympathy is a type of agreement and may justify the addiction and backfire.

Everyone who is involved in the intervention needs to ensure that the addict understands that they are aware of the addiction that the person needs treatment. Don’t let the addict bring up other family problems in an attempt to distract from his problem or defuse the importance of it. It is common to hear the addict initially discuss how much Uncle Joe or grandpa drinks. Don’t let him elude the intention of the gathering. This is only about his problem. It is very helpful to realize the most addicts will be only partly there, meaning their attention will continuously dart around to alibis and justifications, and that they will miss much of what is being communicated by members of the family. A good rule of thumb to follow is to repeat everything that you would like the addict to comprehend and hear at least three times. You are not speaking with somebody who is easily tracking your conversation, so it is important to slowly deliver and repeat your messages with strong intention.
