Both can explain why the women in the study were ones with more risk of addiction because of multiple partners. For women, it’s not as acceptable to go through multiple sexual partners, so engaging in this sort of behavior is a lot riskier than for men.
Whatever is behind this correlation, there are clear implications. When the risk factors of addiction are understood, it’s more possible to keep young people away from bad decisions that could lead to addictive disorders. Even though this single study was only in one area, it should apply easily to nearly all North Americans. Statistics indicate that a quarter of young women have already had three or more sexual partners. That puts quite a few women at addiction risk. If preventive and educational programs are able to emphasize how important it is to make smart choices, many more young adults can be helped.
