Fentanyl suspected Culprit in Three recent Vancouver deaths, 17 overdoses: Police Spokesperson
The Vancouver Police announced that Fentanyl is the suspected culprit in the deaths of three individuals and a sudden outbreak of non-fatal ODs in the last month.
Fentanyl is an opioid derivative and is reported to be between 50 and 100 times more potent than other opioid pharmaceuticals; dosages must be closely monitored to avoid possible overdose.
According to the Police three people A woman in her twenties, a man of 24 and another man of 35 died of overdoses between Tuesday and Wednesday a day before Christmas Eve. Fentanyl is the prime suspect in these Overdoses.
Then another 17 cases occurred between Saturday and Tuesday morning, most of them in the Downtown Eastside.
According to the police, Health Canada is responsible for analyzing the drugs, which were recovered at the scene, nevertheless, officers already suspect that fentanyl will be uncovered here too.
Last week, police were alerted to an unspecified amount of fentanyl that was stolen from a local pharmacy during a robbery.
After 21 recent fentanyl overdoses 4 of which proved fatal the police issued strong warnings about the abuse of this narcotic.
Regular drug users are also alerted to the possibility of fentanyl laced drugs that can cause the unsuspecting to fall foul to their fatal charms, this after the recent spike in overdoses and deaths caused by fentanyl.
Fentanyl is a fast acting narcotic that can deliver heroin like effects in a short amount of time. The drug itself cannot be detected to any of the five senses until it has been introduced to the body, most often this is done transdermally through a skin patch.
When a Vancouver pharmacy was relieved of its percocet supplies under duress, the Vancouver police began to fear that a counterfeit- percocet wave was about to hit the illicit substance market in Vancouver.
“They resemble your every day aspirin” said a Vancouver police spokesperson describing the generic Percocet counterpart , Percocets are laced with fentanyl.
Fentanyl and the effects it is having is becoming a serious problem . Police are finding evidence of fentanyl every where they look, cocaine, fake prescription drugs, heroin and even recreational party drugs.
Because it is not detectable to the senses until ingested in some way, very few people who end up taking it knew they were taking it in the beginning.
The most recent case occurred on Wednesday when a 50 year old man died of a fentanyl overdose.
The point here is that anyone using and abusing unregulated drugs is quite possibly putting themselves in a life threatening situation. Fentanyl is a potent drug, 100 times more so than morphine and over 50 times as strong as pharmaceutical grade Heroin
The Vancouver urge the populace to never attempt this drug on your own and to call 911 immediately if they see or know of anyone who maybe at risk.
