For an individual, this “support” can be anything, For example, going to the gym, going to therapy, going to a AA or NA meeting, or even giving themself time to sit all night and relax. The more often an individual does “maintenance,” the less likely it is to damage the car.
Checking in with yourself
In a perfect world, we don’t stop taking care of ourselves all the time, and the stressful situations in our life don’t always have an effect. But sometimes life is disrupted and we can’t engage in our normal coping activities. Reactive handling begins when a person realizes they need it. Often a person gets caught up in the moment and is afraid or stressed without knowing it before it is too late. Part of what makes mental health and recovery so exciting and challenging is that different people experience anxiety and stress in different ways. It is important to know what stress looks like to them. This may be shortness of breath for some, muscle tension for others, or a combination of many symptoms. During the day, it is best to ask oneself, “How do I feel? or How do I breathe Am I under stress? “As an individual builds that awareness, they can more easily see when it is time to use coping skills.
Again, all of this is easier said than done. By trying to improve an individual’s coping skills, they will experience more than just another day and give themself a chance to live a happy and comfortable life. An individual intends to maintain their recovery and make the right decisions that they are strong enough to succeed in whatever life’s path is preparing them.
