However, if you are an agnostic or atheist, or your beliefs are caused by loss or tragedy, you may not want to hear that you must rely on and believe in a power greater than you. They may think that the 12-step program is just a religious program and therefore think that they will not succeed. While some people like to bring their personal religious beliefs into the healing process, you don’t need to have strong religious beliefs to use the 12 Steps to get better.

Individuals have complete freedom in defining their own higher power. You don’t have to follow a traditional religious path, and you don’t have to believe in something just because someone else might want you to. You can believe in whatever makes sense to you and gives you courage, strength, and something to hold onto.
Some recovering addicts find that they feel a power in a realm greater than themselves. The stars and the sun are very strong, beautiful, and bright. The wind can be a powerful reminder that the universe has a dominating force moving through it. You can see the forces of nature in the waves of the ocean, in storms and in the complete transformation that occurs in each season. A person can choose the wonders of the universe itself or Mother Earth for their own higher power.

For people who feel unwanted or reluctant to surrender their lives to any kind of God or cosmic force of nature, simply believe in the unity of the recovery group. For many recovering people, God stands for “Group of Drunks” and it is God who has the power to keep them safe from drugs or alcohol and heal their lives.
Whenever a group of addicts or alcoholics get together and share their hopes, strengths, and experiences, there is something healing and transformative. When you get to know the people in the meetings you attend, you will see extraordinary changes in other people that are truly amazing. It is often easier to see growth and change in others than to see it in yourself. When you witness people making extraordinary changes in your life, you may end up believing that there is indeed a power greater than you, and that is real in the group.

An individual might not be comfortable with the idea of God that they learned about in church or another type of religious organization. Instead, a person might believe that some type of spiritual force is the power that will keep them sober and is one that cannot be described or defined but they know it is there. Or a person’s faith might just be recognizing there is some type of higher power beyond themselves.
Over time an individual’s definition of what a higher power is might evolve. Their convictions might seem unwavering and strong but their beliefs over time might change somewhat. An individual is free to define what higher power means to them. Believe there is some kind of power that works to help them from a drug or drink one day at a time. Just believe in what other people believe if everything else fails.
