Calgary, Alberta : The three C’s of group therapy for drug and alcohol addiction in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and other parts of Alberta by Options Okanagan Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating alcohol addiction and recovery.
All across the country, there are thousands of group therapy sessions that take place on a daily basis. Sessions vary by leadership, location, topic and so forth. Even though there are many variations of group therapy sessions, there is a core of components that should be implemented in each session. These components are known as the three C’s, which is change, choice and community, and each one of these will be discussed throughout the rest of this article.
1. Change– Change isn’t easy and if it was easy, then addicts wouldn’t need therapy sessions to help overcome their addiction, but change is important and group sessions should focus on change. The overall environment and atmosphere should welcome change, and it should be encouraged. When this is the type of atmosphere that members find themselves in during a therapy session, then they will tend to be more receptive to transformation, but it is important that the environment has a solid structure, as well as boundaries. If the atmosphere is right, then members will find that creating new habits that are healthy is easier to do, so always make sure the environment welcomes changes because this plays a major role in the recovery process.
2. Choice– The truth is that addiction can rob anyone of their choices, and when one is deep into addiction, then their choices can seem very limited. Members should be encourage in wholesome choices, and members should know what their options are. One of the key aspects of recovery is being able to weigh various choices, making decisions, as well as deciding on what action to finally take, and then completing that choice.
3. Community– Addicts tend to thrive when they are alone, but that loneliness can be cut with a sense of community, and it is worth pointing out that social re-engagement is part of the recovery process. Members need to be encouraged to socialize with others. The truth is that issues of communication, commonality, safety and encouragement are wrapped up in the recovery process, at least in regards to the social aspects of it. It is important for group therapy to address those concerns, while at the same time providing a safe haven for members.
The good news is that there are many different techniques that can be used in group therapy. Some examples include different types of interventions, philosophies, as well as strategies. However, the three C’s must be implemented, because if they are not, then the chances are a system may not be as effective as one had hope.
