It is not easy to go through drug rehabilitation. Still, once a person has exited the program, they are not finished with their journey. The “details” are not really important. It does not matter how many substances the person was addicted to. It does not matter if they consumed alcohol in addition to drugs. It doesn’t even matter what level their addiction was at. When someone is trying to recover from an addiction, they should embrace aftercare once they leave the rehab center and before they resume their life. Aftercare assists clients as they try to leave behind their past and embrace their future and everything that is in front of them.

Aftercare gives the recovering individual a chance to receive support and counseling, even after they leave rehab. Each aftercare program is different; some allow clients to start as soon as their rehab program is over. On a sunny morning in June on the Eastside of Vancouver’s Downtown, it only takes eight minutes to locate a fentanyl dealer.

One of these dealers, “Brad”, not his real name, said he has customers who look for fentanyl exclusively.

He sells patches of Ratio or Teva brand fentanyl for $30 up to $80. These patches are typically prescribed by doctors for relieving acute, chronic pain for cancer patients.

Another option that is available to addicts is that for $40 to $80 they can score a “point” (or 0.1 gram) of fentanyl powder, which is ready to be cooked and then injected.

“Brad” – who deals drugs so that he can support his own addiction – states that these days fentanyl is pretty much in everything that is sold on the street now.

But exactly how do Brad and other street dealers wind up with fentanyl, which is painkiller that has been designed for patients in pain and is potentially lethal?

The answer can be found rather quickly by looking up the distribution chain. The answer is: The Internet.

Fentanyl is openly sold Online.

According to a Vancouver, BC sergeant from the RCMP E-Division, it was 2014 when his synthetic drug operation got its first fentanyl reports.

The officer said that initially police were tasked with finding the source.

Mounties found out that nearly all of the fentanyl was arriving from China in pure, powder form. After it was smuggled into Canada via large packages and parcels, it was cut or diluted for street use. The remainder of it is manufactured locally inside secret labs.

The RCMP reports that there is access to mainland China now that would never have been available 10 to 15 years ago, where people can go directly to the source.

When it comes to traditional heroin imports, there would be an individual in Canada do did all of the importing, along with a mediator, and someone inside the source country as well. However, the Internet takes care of all this and provides direct access without the need for all the middlemen.

Fentanyl In Vancouver – B.C. Drug Deaths Higher Than Those From Auto Crashes, A Majority Are Linked With Fentanyl

B.C. Drug Deaths HIGHER than those from car crashes, a majority are linked with the drug Fentanyl – Options Okanagan Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating Opiate and Fentanyl addiction and recovery.

According to new statistics, 308 B.C residents died during the first four months of 2016 due to illicit drug overdoses. This represents a 75 percent increase compared to the 176 deaths that took place during January to May of 2015.

The B.C. Coroners Service reports that the percentage of deaths that are tied with the synthetic drug fantanyl so far has accounted for 56 percent of 2016 deaths.

By comparison, in 2015 31 percent of illicit drug deaths were linked with fentanyl, that were either used knowingly or unknowingly combined with other drugs or on its own.

In April, B.C. public health officials declared that drug deaths as a public emergency following the recording of 200 drug fatalities.

According to Lisa Lapointe, B.C. Chief Coroner, B.C. could potentially experience 750 drug deaths in 2016, if the current rate and trend continues.

She noted that it was hugely significant and added that the 308 drug deaths to date are more than the number of individuals who died last year in motor vehicle crashes, and that the total for 2016 may exceed a typical year’s number of suicides.

So far in 2016, B.C. has average 62 illicit drug deaths a month. January was the highest to date at 77, while in May there were 42.

Dr. Terry Lake, the Health Minister, stated that there is a tentative case to be optimistic that the surge experienced at the beginning of the year might have plateaued and could subside.

Dr. Lake stated that five new supervised drug consumption sites are being considered by Vancouver Coastal Health, and that Interior Health is considering them for Kamloops and Kelowna and Island Health for Victoria.

He also commended the new approach being taken by the federal government to harm reduction and marijuana policy.

Dr. Lake said there was evidence that the government was aware that they could reduce overdose death, and that other related harms and hospitalizations could be reduced, and that people could to be connected to services after the addicts were ready to accept assistance.

Dr. Lake also suggested that a number of the newly supervised sites might be clinical settings instead of like Vancouver’s existing Insite facility, but that it would be up to the health care professionals which model would be chosen.

The doctor said that any politician he had spoken to understands what a failure the so-called war on drugs has been and that different approaches need to be taken.

Also acknowledged by Dr. Lake was the fact that B.C. hasn’t been able to meet drug treatment bed demand. He stated that the government has continued to increase its investment in substance abuse treatment and mental health.

There is a new emerging concern, which is that the synthetic drug W-18 has arrived in B.C. In is much more potent than fentanyl is, and may cause death or overdose with much smaller doses.

Earlier this spring in Burnaby, police raided a fentanyl lab that had been making knock-off heroin. Tests showed traces of W-18 and investigator suspect it might have reached the streets.

Fentanyl is actually a prescription painkiller that many hospitals used. However Health Canada has never authorized W-18 for use.

Compared to fentanyl, W-18 is 100 times more powerful, which makes it a lot riskier for users, who often think they are taking Oxycontin or heroin, and more profitable for those operating drug labs.

According to Dr. Mark Tyndall, who is executive director for the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, so far, it has been quite difficult to identify W-18 in toxicology testing. He says there is no proof of it being responsible for any B.C. deaths yet.

Have you heard of W-18? If not, you may be unaware of just how strong this drug really is. It is considerably stronger than fentanyl, which is certainly dangerous of its own accord.

Alberta police recently became more aware of W-18, which is an opioid. Last summer, they determined that W-18 was present in several pills; these pills were part of a batch of more than 100 fentanyl pills that were taken from a home in Alberta. Tests showed that W-18 was present.

W-18 has been on the police radar because it is significantly more toxic than fentanyl. This is particularly concerning because fentanyl has taken many lives as it is.

What Are The Origins Of W-18?

In the early 80s, there were several opioid compounds found at the University of Alberta. Of the 32 total compounds, W-18 is the most deadly. Because it is not regulated, it is not hard to either manufacture this drug or purchase the drug. Obviously, that is concerning, because you do not know how many people will get their hands on a very dangerous substance.

So far, W-18 has only been found in Alberta. However, it is an issue that the entire province needs to pay attention to. Fentanyl, for example, has popped up in Calgary. That means that there is potential for this drug to travel as well, and police agencies should have W-18 on their radar as a result. And, just like fentanyl, W-18 is manufactured in China and typically travels through British Columbia. There is nothing that can really be done to cut back on the supply, because of the fact that it is being produced in another country. Therefore, it is best to put time and attention on the demand side, by helping others learn what it is and making prevention a priority.

The Problem With Fentanyl.

There have been more fentanyl deaths this year than ever before. As a result, people are starting to sit up and take notice of this drug. Law enforcement has also started speaking out about W-18 as well. The statistics are concerning; in 2015, there were 213 deaths attributed in fentanyl. In 2014, there were just 120 deaths attributed to fentanyl. And, in 2011, only six people died as a result of fentanyl. Families that have lost loved ones to the drug are starting to speak up as well, detailing the dangers of prescription drugs and the impact they have had on their families.

Because more people than ever are dying as a result of fentanyl, certain steps are being taken to help with the situation. Naloxone will now be more available, for example. It is a medicine that helps those that have overdosed on opioids.

In addition, Health Canada is thinking of making some changes as well. They would like to see naloxone available to anyone, even those without a prescription.

Still, there continue to be worries about W-18. Because it is so much stronger than fentanyl, no one even knows if naloxone will help.

Ontario Sees Bootleg Fentanyl

Police have spoken out about bootleg fentanyl after there were several heroin overdoses in different areas.

In just three days in late January in Waterloo, six people overdosed, with one person dying. Heroin played a role in five of the six situations, and fentanyl is thought to be involved with one (at least). Close to the same time period, Kingston reported five overdoses, with one being fatal. Of those, three are thought to have ties to fentanyl.

This is happening with alarming frequency. Other areas of Canada have had a problem for a while now, and the situation is starting to present itself in Ontario. Bootleg fentanyl is of particular concern, because it appears that there is a much greater likelihood that people will overdose after taking it.

Prescription opioids in general are receiving a lot of attention in Canada, because consumption is greatest in this country. The United States comes in second. No one really knows yet if W-18 has made its way to Ontario; toxicology reports often take a while to be released. One thing is certain, however; opioids need to be taken very seriously.
