Denial and addictions, and the first steps toward recovery in Vancouver, British Columbia by Options Okanagan Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating drug and alcohol addiction and recovery.
One of the biggest issues that a lot of addicts in Vancouver have when it comes to recovering is simply admitting that there is an issue in the first place. Denial is a major defence mechanism for a lot of addicts – it serves to protect them so that they do not have to face up to their addiction.
When someone is confronted about their addiction they are likely to refuse to discuss it. This is not because they are lying, but rather because they simply do not realise that it is a serious problem. Over time, as the addiction starts to interfere with more parts of their life, they may begin to recognize the issue.
Denial is sometimes a form of coping mechanism that protects the psyche of the addict. They may even, deep down, fear that their addictiona is causing problems, but they will shut down and deny the issue rather than face the problems.
Fear is a major motivator for this. They do not want other people to find out about their addiction because they are worried about the shame and the consequences. They do not want to have to try to stop taking whatever they are addicted to, because they are scared that they will fail. Therefore, they try to live the way they always have, and just ignore the addiction.
If the addict pretends that there is no issue, then they don’t have to worry about the pain, conflict, stress and physical struggles associated with beating the addiction. They hope that they will “get away with” the addiction for longer – as long as no-one bothers them about it, they convince themselves that they will be fine.
On the outside, as a healthy person looking at an addict, it is clear that this is not true – but addicts are not thinking clearly. There are actual chemical changes that take place in the minds of addicts, and that stop the addict from being able to see the truth. It is not their fault, and they need help to work through this. Do not blame them for what they are going through – support them as they try to find ways to cope with it.
Addiction is hard to cope with, but it is possible. If you can enlist the help of a good therapist or rehab center, addiction can be beaten.
