What Should A Person Do If Their Parents Are Struggling With Alcohol or Drug Addiction?
Often times, when an individual thinks of helping their loved ones with an addiction problem, most people’s thoughts and minds jump to helping their child or significant other. The idea that this might be an addicted father or mother seldom comes to mind. This is an unnatural thought for a young individual. Their parents have to take care of them not the other way around. When an individual’s parent is addicted, the roles are reversed and the child can become the adult parent. This difficult situation is worrying and frightening for many children and young adults. While there are no guidelines on this, there are strategies that can help them reduce the feelings of helplessness and fear.
Try Seeking Out A Older Trusted Relative Or Adult
There are many emotions and unexplored waters as parents struggle with their addiction. Therefore, it is important to find other adults a person can trust. This can be a family member, therapist or counselor, teacher, or others in support groups. When a person opens themself up to a safe environment, they will feel less alone and can relieve anxiety. Some of the recommended support groups are Adult Children of Alcoholics, Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, and Alateen.
Create some healthy boundaries
The word “limits” gets thrown around a lot, especially when it’s a family drug addiction. Addiction is known as a family disease for a good reason. The potential of the entire family system is inevitable. Healthy boundaries are different for everybody, but they need to create a sense of security and well-being, and a sense of control over a person’s life once established. Here are some examples of healthy boundaries:
Learn that to say “no” is needed and acceptable. If an individual’s parent asks them to do something that makes them uncomfortable, a person can safely say “no” without further explanation.
To identify with their space and protect it. Space can be defined in many environments, such as physical, emotional, and their property.
Proper communication with their parents. When a person can use self-testimony and focus on their feelings and experiences, they can easily take responsibility for themself instead of taking responsibility for their parents’ reactions to their boundaries.
And boundaries or limits shouldn’t be ultimatums. For an individual to develop a healthy boundary it will take some time and practice. It’s important to see this as a process and to continue to evaluate and adjust their boundaries as a person feels comfortable.
Find something that makes an individual feel better
As mentioned earlier, anyone who is addicted, one family’s addiction can often cover up something else. It is important that a person finds or continue activities that give them a sense of happiness and purpose beyond their parents’ addictions. When a person becomes part of a healthy community, they can find other ways out of the world. Some examples could be joining local area community groups, playing some fun sports, meeting their friends to play or listen to music outside their home environment, or joining a book or chess club.
When roles change and children become parents, life seems out of control and unmanageable. It is important to remember that a person is in control of their life and can apply some of the above ideas at their own pace to create a sense of security and reduce interdependence. Just because their parents “brought” them into this world doesn’t mean they will take the world from them.
