Risks Of Future Opioid Abuse In Teenagers Prescribed Opiates

According to a recent study from a leading Canadian university, teenagers who have been prescribed sleep or anti-anxiety medications are at increased risk of abusing those drugs in the future.

Addiction researchers from the university found that teens who acquired scripts for anxiety or sleep medications were 9 times more likely to start abusing those drugs within a two-year window than teens who had not been prescribed such medications. In addition, teens prescribed anxiety meds during adolescence were ten times more likely to take another person’s anxiety medication at a later date.

The study also discovered that the length of time a teen took anxiety or sleep medications had an effect on their chances of later abusing those drugs. Teens with long-term prescriptions for those medications had an increased probability of abusing them later when compared with teens who were issued short-term prescriptions.

A Surprising Number Use Medications Prescribed To Others

The number of teens taking drugs prescribed to others was a big surprise to the Canadian addiction researchers. While the researchers had initially started the study to find out the number of teens abusing their own sleep or anti-anxiety medications, they inadvertently found out that many teens were abusing such medications by taking drugs prescribed to their peers.

The discovery adds new layers of concern for parents worried about their teenage sons and daughters abusing prescription drugs. Parents can be super vigilant with regulating the prescription drug use they allow in their own homes by locking medicine cabinets and monitoring the number of pills in each bottle. However, it is more difficult to keep track of a teen’s actions outside of the family home and to prevent teens from receiving or exchanging medications with friends.

To prevent medication abuse, parents and doctors have to take time to educate teens about the dangers of misusing and abusing prescription drugs. The risk of serious drug dependence and addiction rises drastically when medications are misused. Furthermore, the potential for addiction, dependence, injury or even death increases massively if sleep or anxiety medications are taken alongside alcohol or narcotics.

The possible legal repercussions of prescription drug abuse also need to be considered. Sharing prescription medications for controlled substances, which many sleep and anxiety drugs are classified, is a felony.

High Incidences Of Mental Disorders

The risks associated with prescribing sleep and anxiety drugs do not negate the benefits these medications can have for many teens struggling with severe anxiety disorders and chronic sleep problems. However, the large number of teens now suffering from anxiety and sleep disorders is a cause for concern in and of itself.

Out of the 1,900 teens who took part in the study, 11% had been prescribed anxiety or sleep medication at one time. The number of teens suffering from anxiety disorders and sleep issues is likely higher. Many other studies, for instance, suggests that one in three teens now struggle with some form of depression.

Finding out why such a large number of teens are now facing mental health issues could help to prevent others from developing chronic sleep problems, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. It would then be possible to reduce the number of teens seeking prescription medications to deal with those disorders. In turn, this would potentially decrease the number of teens putting themselves in danger by abusing prescription drugs.

How To Ensure Your Teen Doesn’t Abuse Prescription Drugs | Opioid Addiction in Alberta and BC | Options Okanagan Treatment Centers

Prescription drugs are meant to treat a particular condition or ailment. Since everyone can get a prescription for these drugs, you need to be particularly careful if your teen is using them. Although these drugs are provided to treat various health conditions, most people abuse them knowingly or unknowingly. Sedatives, ADHD drugs, and pain medications among others can be easily misused leading to a habit. The risks of misusing prescription drugs include serious side effects, overdose, and addiction. That said, you need to ensure your teen is responsible enough when taking these drugs, and understands the risks involves should he/she abuse them.

Here are some of the ways you can prevent prescription drug abuse by teens.

1. Let The Teen Know The Facts
Most teens aren’t aware of possible side effects and the dangers that come with abusing prescription drugs. Many will even abuse these drugs unknowingly, which again puts them at an even higher risk. Many are of the idea that anything that came from a doctor is safe. Having the kids learn the facts about drugs, and most importantly prescription drugs can help them make better decisions in the future. One way to do this is by helping him/her read up the fine print containing the risks and possible side effects of using a specific drug. Do this together and dissect the risks associated together. Use a conversational tone to ensure he/she grasps everything.

Intervention and Rehab, Opiates, Heroin addiction and Fentanyl abuse and addiction in Calgary, Alberta Teens

2. Know Which Prescription Drugs Can Be Abused
Make it your mission to know which prescription drugs can be abused. Some of the most commonly abused prescription drugs include stimulants, sedatives, tranquilisers, and narcotic painkillers. Opioids prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain can be abused too. Stimulants are commonly used to treat ADHD while sedatives may be prescribed to treat anxiety disorders. All these, if abused, can lead to addiction hence a rough road for your kid. For this reason, you need to have a record of all prescription drugs in the house and most importantly, know those that can be easily abused.

3. Where Teens Access/Get Prescriptions
Most adolescents and teens will get these prescription drugs from a family member and friends. Many pick up the habit from their peers as well. To reduce the risk of your kid abusing these drugs, have all painkillers, sedatives, and stimulates kept under lock and key. Leaving some of these drugs lying around only increases the risk of abuse. Teens will also get these prescriptions from a doctor. They can either fake a condition or even worse, use someone else’s prescription to buy the drugs. Many will take to online pharmacies to order the prescription drugs.

4. Understand The Motivating Factors
Take the extra step to learn and understand why teens abuse prescription drugs. Some teens will start abusing prescription drugs due to peer pressure, while others may have other reasons for doing the same. One of the reasons teens prefer abusing prescriptions to other street drugs is because they are readily available. Keeping these drugs out of your teens reach can help reduce the risks. You might also have to talk to him/her about peer pressure and how not to give in to the same. Let the teen know of other options and choices he/she has, especially if they want to fit in.

Drug Rehab and Interventions in Alberta and BC

The pressure to succeed (from parents and peers) is another reason a teenager will want to use stimulants. ADHD drugs, e.g. Adderall, are the most commonly abused drugs by teens. This is because Adderall, for instance, helps increase the user’s ability to concentrate, stay awake, and focus. That alone is a motivating factor for even the brightest students to abuse the drug.

Self-medication is another reason your son or daughter will turn to prescriptions. Mental illness and drug abuse are correlated. This is to say; a teen will reach for these drugs as a way to get relief from an underlying condition.

Teenager Drug Opioid Addiction and Recovery Programs in Alberta and BC

Prescription drug abuse is widespread among teenagers and the general population. Parents can however help influence their children’s ability to make better decisions and especially when it comes to drug abuse. As a parent, ignorance shouldn’t be an option when there are kids around. Learn to talk, motivate, and teach them the right ways.

Teenagers and Prescription Drug Addiction

Researchers from Universities in both Canada and America found that it is fairly common for teens, who visit the emergency room, to have a history of prescription drug abuse. In fact, the study found that over 15% of these teenagers who needed to go to the ER had abused prescription painkillers or sedatives in the last year.

Prescription drug abuse has been a major concern throughout all of North America. But what may be more startling is the high use of prescription drug abuse by teenagers. In these studies, researchers wanted to research how many of the teens who left the ER were had abused prescription drugs in the past. They also wanted to see if teens visited the ER in hopes of being prescribed high powered painkillers or sedatives.

Teen Rehab & Intervention, Opiates, Heroin addiction and Fentanyl abuse and addiction in Calgary, Alberta Teenagers

It is a fact that those who need emergency care are usually patients who have very little money and are low income. This is because these patients are most likely not covered by primary insurance. While it is true that some patients in the emergency room do need emergency medical help, most people are seeking care because they feel that this is their only option. It has been proven that low income people have a higher risk of abusing substances like prescription drugs.

Teens Have Easy Access to Prescription Drugs

Of the 2,900 teens that were surveyed, researchers found that a staggering 9.8 percent of them had abused prescription painkillers such as hydrocodone, oxycontin, and methadone. Researchers also discovered that 6.8 percent of these young adults had abused sedatives like Xanax, Valium, or Ativan.

This research study also confirmed that most of these teenagers who had abused prescription drugs did not have a prescription for what they had abused. In fact, the research showed that only 18.5 percent of the teenagers who abused prescription painkillers were ever prescribed the medication. And what’s worse, only 11.5 percent of the teenagers who abused sedatives ever had a prescription.

Teenagers Living with Opiate Fentanyl and Heroin addiction in Calgary, Alberta

This study confirms that it is easy for teenagers to find prescription drugs. It became increasingly easy to find these prescription after the year 1996. This was when the FDA approved OxyContin. OxyContin was created by The Sackler Family of Purdue Pharmaceuticals. At this time, doctors began prescribing this drug to more effectively treat their patients with chronic pain. However, now it seems that this drug was overprescribed and is partially responsible for the opioid epidemic.

Teens Who Are at Higher Risk

It is important to note that the study found some teens would visit the emergency room because of their prescription drug abuse. The Addiction Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that prescription drug overdoses have increased dramatically in the last 10 years. Studies have shown that teens who use prescription drugs without a prescription are far more likely to abuse them and other substances. Research has also shown that these teenagers who abuse prescription drugs are more likely to drink and drive and to also allow themselves to be a passenger of a drunk driver.

If a teen gets prescriptions for painkillers and sedatives from the emergency room it makes them even more vulnerable to abuse.

It is true that the chance of addiction is relatively small if these drugs are taken in accordance to doctor’s orders, some people believe doctors are not concerned enough about the potential of their patients to abuse the drugs. Many call for more caution on the part of doctors prescribing addictive medication.

Your Addiction Recovery Process in Alberta and BC

If you are an individual who has deep religious convictions, then being told that you must believe in a higher power to recover will make sense to you. However, if you are agnostic or an atheist or your faith has been challenged by loss or tragedy, you might not want to hear that you should rely on as well as believe in a power that is greater than yourself. Believing in a higher power, for many people, is at the core of their recovery. However, there are numerous ways that a higher power can be defined.

Newcomers without strong religious convictions, when they hear discussing a higher power, are turned off sometimes by 12-step programs. They might think that 12-step programs are simply religious programs and so feel for that reason that it will not work for them. Although some individuals are comfortable introducing their personal religious beliefs into their recovery process, it isn’t required for you to have strong religious convictions to using the 12 steps to recover.

The Freedom To Select Your Higher Power

Fortunately, you do have total freedom in defining your very own higher power. It isn’t necessary to follow a traditional religious path and you don’t need to believe in anything specific just because other individuals might want you to. You can believe in whatever makes sense to you and provide you with courage, strength, and something that you can hold onto.

Some individuals in recovery discover that they sense a power in nature that is greater than themselves. The stars and sun are powerful, beautiful and bright. Wind can be a powerful reminder that the universe has a commanding force moving through it. You can see the power of nature in ocean waves, in storms, and in the total transformation that takes place each season. You can choose where the universe itself or Mother Nature is your very own higher power.

Believe in the Group

For individuals who feel reluctant or resistant to turn over their lives to any type of God or the power of the universe or nature, consider just believing in the recovery group’s unity. Many people who are in recovery state the God is short for Group of Drunks, and this is the God that has power for keeping them sober and healing their lives.

There is something healing and transformative whenever a group of addicts or alcoholics come together and share their hopes, strengths, and experiences. As you become more familiar with the individuals at the meetings that you participate in, you will be incredible changes in these other people that are truly miraculous. Often it is easier recognizing growth and change in other individuals than to see them within yourself. As you witness people making amazing transformations within their lives, you might end up believing that there truly is a power that is greater than yourself, which is the actual group.

Other Types Of Faith

When you can have an open mind when attending meetings, you will hear numerous interpretations when it comes to what God actually is, or what type of power others rely on as part of their own recovery processes. There are probably as many different higher power definitions as there are people who participate in 12-step programs for their recovery. Although you might not agree with some of the things that you hear, you might also hear certain perspectives that you have never thought about before.

You might not be comfortable with the idea of God that you learned about in church or another type of religious organization. Instead, you might believe that some type of spiritual force is the power that will keep you sober and is one that cannot be described or defined but you know it is there. Or your faith might just be recognizing there is some type of higher power beyond yourself.

Over time your definition of what a higher power is might evolve. Your convictions might seem unwavering and strong but your beliefs over time might change somewhat. You are free to define what higher power means to you. Believe there is some kind of power that works to help you away from a drug or drink one day at a time. Just believe in what other people believe if everything else fails.

Addiction can be a really complex thing, and there’s a good reason it is still frequently studied. Friendship matters a lot. Especially as a youth. While this sounds relatively simple or basic, understanding how deeply that’s true makes a difference. This goes before the high school years, as well. Friendships from all the way back to middle school can have a very strong influence on whether or not a teenager ends up becoming addicted or falling into the trap of substance abuse.

When it comes to serious decisions teenagers fall to peer pressure quite easily and that means that there is some strong evidence from research showing that friends are heavily influential when it comes to the decision of whether or not to use drugs.

Teen Rehabs & Intervention, Opiates, Heroin addiction and Fentanyl abuse and addiction in Calgary, Alberta Teenagers

Many times a friendship grows because people have similar interests. This makes sense, but many people don’t think about the fact that these similar interests also tend to keep friends together. This can end up very much feeding itself as a circle since friends stay together because they have the same interests but since they’re already friends when one person in that group picks up a habit, chances are all the others will too.

Relapses – Alcohol Sober Tips – Alcohol Rehabs in Alberta and BC

It is incredibly rare and unlikely that teenage friendships stay strong when the people have very different interests. If one really gets into drugs, chances (according to research) are pretty high that the rest will get to that point, as well.

This study was a joint one involving three different universities and the results came back consistently: friendships matter. This goes for those who end up using drugs, those who become heavily addicted, and those who aren’t addicted at all. The friends will almost always reflect the habits of the individual when it comes to drugs and alcohol.

So What Are The Influencing Factors?

While there are always some potential for outside influences that affect the individual, the focus on peer relations have joined many past studies to bring together a wealth of information.

Some of the main points to keep in mind:

  • Drug using peers are one of the single biggest risk factors when it comes to teen addiction & substance abuse
  • Various “good behavior” activities seem to discourage use while other “bad behavior” activities open the door
  • The more support from drug using friends, the more likely the teen will use
  • Levels of family dysfunction can directly affect the chances of drug use
  • So can anxiety, depression, and lack of social acceptance

While this can sound like a cliched message from an after school special, the old bit of advice to parents is true: knowing who their children are friends with and spending time with is hugely important. Seeing the danger signs early will help parents know if they should be worried, and understanding the level of influence friends have both good and bad makes a huge difference.

Being involved with a child’s friends will give the parents several advantages, such as:

  • Being able to understand potential exposure level to their own children
  • Seeing which friendships are good and which ones are risky/potentially troubling
  • Building a stronger relationship with a child is never a bad thing for a parent
  • If issues arise a parent can react sooner for treatment in the early phases when it’s most important

Can You Have Too Many Stints or Tours in Rehabs?

When you go to rehab several times, those supporting you will start asking questions such as, “Why is it so hard for you to stay sober? Is it too much? For how long will you keep interrupting your life to go to rehab?” Some people don’t know is that addiction is a brain disease that needs ongoing, lifelong treatment. That is not to imply that you will have to go to rehab two times a year throughout your life. It may mean multiple trips to rehab to achieve and maintain sobriety.

Addiction Is A Chronic Problem

It is important for those people who want to overcome addiction and their loved ones to understand that research shows that drug and alcohol addiction is a disease. Several studies have shown that addiction is a chronic illness. What this means is that it never goes away and there is no cure.

Intervention, Opiates, Heroin addiction and Fentanyl abuse and addiction in Calgary, Alberta

Just like diabetes, asthma or hypertension, you will have an addiction but treatment can help you control it. A chronic disease flares up from time to time regardless of your best efforts. Researchers have shown that addiction is a chronic illness since is similar to other chronic illnesses in many ways. One of the characteristics that addiction shares with other chronic illnesses is a relapse.

For instance, addicts relapse just like those suffering from diabetes. Over time and persistent treatment, you will know how to maintain your sobriety with outpatient treatment. However, before this happens, you will have to go to rehab several times. So, don’t feel bad about it and don’t let anyone else make you feel bad about it.

Look for a Good Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Choosing the right rehab will maximize your chances of success when it comes to overcoming addiction. It also reduces the chances of having to go back to rehab. So, it is a good idea to take your time when looking for a facility so that you can find a facility whose practices will suit your needs.

Treating addiction is no longer a free-for-all. According to research, there are factors that make treatment very effective. Find out about these factors before looking for a drug, opioid or alcohol rehabilitation facility to make an informed decision. These factors include:

1) Individualized treatment plans that are flexible
2) Use of medication when necessary
3) Individual and group behavioral therapy sessions
4) Treatment plans that address both the addiction and the individual instead of the addiction alone
5) Diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues
6) Continuous monitoring for alcohol or drug opiate use
7) Plans for continuing care, aftercare and maintaining outpatient treatment

I Cannot Afford Rehab. What Can I Do?

If you relapse and feel like you should go back to rehab, just go. However, what if you cannot afford to go back to rehab? Maybe you used up your insurance allowances for the year or you paid for your rehab out of pocket and you no longer have the money to pay for rehab.

Luckily, there are other options such as outpatient therapy with an experienced addiction counselor. While this option may not be as extensive or restrictive as rehab, it helps. And the good thing is that it is cheaper than going back to rehab. Your friends and supportive family will help keep you accountable during this time.

You can also join a support group. Support groups are free of charge and meet on a regular basis in most locations. Take advantage of both the meetings and a sponsor. Keep in mind that a more experienced recovering addict can be a very powerful ally and is someone you can call whenever you feel weak or vulnerable.

He or she will also keep you accountable and help you meet your sobriety goals. Always remember that there is no such thing as too many trips to a rehab facility as long as you afford these trips and the treatment is benefiting you.

Everyone is unique and as such, people need different amounts of time and treatment plans to achieve and maintain sobriety. Sobriety requires patience and commitment. So be patient and committed to your sobriety goals to succeed in your quest to achieve and maintain sobriety.

Addiction Is A Disease That Affects The Whole Family

It’s certainly clear that addiction can be the cause of much harm to the person who is affected by it, however, the impact that such an addiction has on the loved ones of the addict is something that can frequently be overlooked. For parents who have children like Aubrey and are in the middle of the painful reality of substance abuse, their pain is utterly devastating and certainly unique. Indeed, for a parent to watch their child battle an addiction can be extremely draining and challenging.

Rehab & Intervention, Opiates, Heroin addiction and Fentanyl abuse and addiction in Calgary, Alberta Teenagers

There are a number of tips which can aid families who are coping with addiction:

1. Always keep at the forefront of your mind that addiction is a disease. Just like heart disease, diabetes and the likes, addiction is based on genetics, as well as social and environmental influences. Recovering from addiction is not simply down to how much willpower a person has. People do not choose to become addicted to alcohol or drugs, in the same way, a person does not choose to develop heart disease. When there is a clear understanding of this, negative judgment that can break up families is minimized. Instead, it is important to have clearly in mind that this disease has taken control of your loved one and they are in desperate need of support, your support.

2. It’s vital to understand that enabling causes harm. Certainly, you love your child who is currently struggling with an addiction, however, you may take actions, such as providing them with money when they ask for it, which could enable them to stay on their addiction course. You may think you are helping them to get back on their feet, but in reality, they could be using the money to purchase more drugs.

3. Accept that the likelihood is that you cannot do the fixing here. Since your child is the only one that can honestly decide to do something about the addiction, normally it is a problem that only the addict can truly fix. Failure and frustration can result from too much parental interference. However, while it is correct to encourage your child to get help, the nature of the disease means it is advisable to seek the assistance of a professional to guide you.

4. Don’t forget to care for yourself. It is very common for a parent to put the needs of their child above their own in such situations – this can actually cause harm to both of you. When you ensure that you have cared for yourself physically and emotionally, you will be in a better place to support your child. This may mean finding ways to cope with the stress you are facing, such as getting sufficient sleep, eating healthily, exercising on a regular basis and taking part in social activities that you enjoy. You are certainly not ignoring your child’s needs but rather reducing your stress and anxiety so that you can support your child through their recovery in the best way possible.

When a son or daughter has been taken over by alcohol or drugs, the parent is left with overwhelming fear and anxiety. Even the best family dynamics in the world can be damaged by addiction and when there is no treatment the potential for family life to be completely disrupted most certainly exists. Both the child and the parents can benefit from understanding the role of the family in addiction recovery, as well as handling the damage caused. For a child to recover long-term, family support can be essential.

A team of addiction researchers recently observed that there some essential steps that adults and doctors can take when it comes to preventing teenagers from getting their hands on opiate drugs.

Parents and adults that may or may not have valid drug prescriptions are considered to be the main source of opiates abused by teenage users. To keep teenagers from accessing prescription opiate drugs, researchers drawn from 5 different institutions studied the measures that adults and physicians can use in a study about the abuse of substances. To keep teenagers from getting their hands on these dangerous medications, the researchers identified a number of approaches.

Both synthetic and natural opiate medications are based on the compounds found in the poppy plant. Each one of these numerous compounds is unique from the other. Even with these differences when all opioids reach the human brain via the bloodstream, they produce three different effects: they reduce the baseline rate of cell communication in the spinal cord and the brain, create a euphoric feeling in the pleasure center of the brain and decrease the brain’s capacity to respond and receive signals of pain.

These medications can be used to relieve a number of physical symptoms including severe diarrhea and coughs that do not go away even after using other medications as well as severe and mild pain. Fatal opiate overdose and diagnosable opiate addiction/abuse are, quite sadly, the two main outcomes associated with the misuse of these commonly prescribed medical drugs. In the US and Canada, millions of people are currently addicted to using different types of opiates. Cases of opiate overdose resulted in the deaths of more then 135 American and Canadian citizens combined on a daily basis.

Adults Can Use The Following Strategies To Prevent Teenage Access To Opiates

The role, deliberate or otherwise, played by the behavior of adults when it comes to encouraging the overdose, abuse or misuse of opiates by young kids or teens was investigated in a study. The propensity for some parents to share with their children, teens and those who are younger, as well as the propensity of some children, teens and younger ones alike, to look for ways to get to the opiates used by their parents and the general belief that parents and other adults are the main source of the opiates used by young kids and teenagers were the main reasons for this research.

Opiate Addiction Recovery in Alberta and BC

To limit access to prescription opiates by young kids and teenagers, the researchers came up with three recommendations. Ensuring that parents appreciate the important nature of proper disposal of opiate medications that they have not used at home, making sure that opiates are locked in cabinets that cannot be accessed easily by young children or teenagers and asking physicians to underline the dangers of opiates whenever they prescribe them to adults and parents, are the three approaches that the researchers came up with.

The actions of physicians and other health practitioners in the implementation of the prevention strategies developed were noted by the people behind the study. To accurately come up with the best strategies to prevent teens and younger kids from gaining access to opiates, the researchers also noted the absence of practical evidence demonstrating whether the above mentioned strategies actually work as well as the need to carry out additional research.

Alberta/BC – Relapses in Men

Conditions of relapse are most unfortunate for men recovering from addiction and dependence on drugs or alcohol. Relapsing makes the recovery progress that much harder and has often been considered a sign of failure.

Nevertheless it is important to remember that a relapse can occur to anyone and is a perfectly natural part of the full recovery process. Just like one who has suffered cancer and almost beat the problem, can suffer from its effects in the aftermath of treatment.

Men may fall into conditions of relapse for a variety of reasons. Following are some of the most common reasons that men will relapse into addiction:

1. Undiagnosed Disorders

It has been estimated that more than half of men who are suffering from alcoholic conditions or substance dependence are also suffering from a variety of potential psychiatric or emotional conditions that can be contributing to the problem. These can eventually cause the individual to seek relief through the only method of self-medication widely available, drugs and alcohol. The chances of falling back into these problems increases if these underlying disorders that prompt substance abuse are not remedied.

2. Lack of Proper Support

Without the proper support of those around them, men are likely to experience the challenging events of life and even the great rewards of life to far greater extremes with the potential for negative consequences. For example, life changing event like terminating relations, leaving specific jobs and other stressful events can also come with a hefty load of shame and discouragement which can lead to seeking solace in former habits.

By the same measure, those that are recovering may also enjoy great success and new opportunities. This can lead to happier feelings and the desire for celebration. This can also lead to alcohol and drug use which can also end in abusive problems. Studies have shown that the use of alcohol for reasons of celebration is a more common occurrence in men than in women.

Furthermore, men can feel less interested in participating in a support group and the important 12-step process. This can result in a lack of support where and when it is needed most.

3. Old Environment’s, Friends and Connections

It is difficult to leave behind the old connections, friends and environment that supported their old destructive ways. Men who achieve sobriety but then go back to hang out with friends and acquaintances that are still using have a harder time recovering. The constant presence of triggers can encourage them to begin using again.

4. Romantic Relations

They get involved in a romantic or sexual relationship before they are properly suited to handle the depth of such an interaction or the potential for its termination. The sad truth is that a relationship during the recovery time can pose one of the greatest potential threats to the recovering individual. If the relationship were to take a turn for the worse, the aftermath may leave the recovering individual in a greater risk of falling back and suffering relapse. Until the coping mechanisms at his disposal have been fully restored, even the smallest upheavals in relationship can be cause for serious setbacks.

A full recovery from drug and alcohol dependence takes a lifetime of strength and committed efforts. Unfortunately, many alcoholics and addicts in recovery go through one or multiple relapses. If you have experienced a relapse, you might have feelings of disappointment and deep shame about yourself, and also your loved ones might be expressing that they are disappointed in you. You might have triggered powerful urges to continue using drugs or alcohol if you picked up, and you are now experiencing some very unpleasant cravings.

By picking up, you might regret it and try getting back on track immediately. Or a relapse might indicate that deep down inside you are not convinced you truly are powerless over drugs and alcohol. You might want to believe you can control your drug use or drinking now that you have learned a few things about what might have caused your addiction to spiral out of control.

Making The Decision To Continue With Recovery

You are the only one who can decide if you would like to continue with your journey on recovery. Well-meaning friends and family cannot force you into trying again. But if you would like to get restarted on your addiction recovery, having a relapse does not mean you cannot recover. It simply means you took a slight detour. For many individuals, relapse is part of the overall learning process of their recovery. Having a relapse may help to point out things you should not do, like not attending meetings or spending time with old friends who still take drugs and drink. They might be lessons that you need to learn for good.

A relapse may trigger many feelings. You might be angry at yourself, hopeless or frustrated. It doesn’t matter how much time you have devoted, you might question whether or not it is possible for you to recover from your addiction, especially if you have gone through one or multiple relapses.

Go Back to Attending Meetings

In order to continue on your recovery journey, it is critical for you to return to going back to attending meetings. Stick with individuals who are following the right path. Pay very close attention to the hope, strength, and experience that others are sharing. Build up your own support network.

People Living with Opiate Fentanyl and Heroin addiction in Calgary, Alberta

If your past problems were partially caused by being reluctant to reach out to connect with other people, now is the time for you to learn from your past mistakes. If you haven’t had a sponsor ever or your sponsor was not a good fit for you, then search for a new one. Ask people for their phone numbers and call them. Speak with other people and tell them you are having a difficult time.

Forgive Yourself For Not Being Perfect

Don’t continuously beat yourself up for having a relapse. After all, you are human, and this means you are imperfect. Since you are an addict, you have developed the habit of reaching for alcohol or drugs in order to avoid feeling unpleasant feelings or dealing with reality. When you relapse, you do what you are used to doing.

That doesn’t mean you are a bad individual. It just means you haven’t learned yet what tools that you need to pick up when you are have difficulties instead of turning to drugs. You might have not identified what your triggers are for setting off your compulsion to use. You might have become complacent and forgot to remain focused on taking full responsibility for your recovery process.

It is very important to not dwell on your relapse. Do not continue to remind yourself of picking up. If you dwell in the problem and continuously doubt your ability for staying sober, then you will keep being unable to recover.

Alberta News Flash – Keep It Simple

Keep in mind that if you were able to remain sober for a certain amount of time prior to your relapse, then you know how to do it. If you haven’t ever been sober for longer than 24 hours consecutively, that doesn’t mean you are unable to learn how to do it. Recover occurs one day at a time. Set a goal of staying away from a drug or drink for just one day. Then do that exact same thing the next day.

It can be challenging to recover from alcohol or drug abuse, but it is also fairly simple at the same time. Surround yourself with other people who are in recovery, when necessary ask for help, and no matter what happens don’t pick of a drug or drink. To stay sober, the number one priority in your life needs to be sobriety. Achieving long-term sobriety definitely is possible. Other people have done it so that means you can as well.
