A survey was conducted by a leading medical research center that shows that teenagers have a tendency to report various sets of consequences for marijuana use and alcohol use. It was found by researchers that there was a strong association between unsafe driving and teenage drinking. In the study, the teenagers who reported to drink frequently were more than 15 times likely to report driving unsafely than teenagers reporting no history of drinking. Frequent users of marijuana were three times more likely to report driving unsafely than the teenagers who don’t use marijuana.

Alcohol, compared to marijuana, were more likely to result in behavior that they regretted later, according to teenagers participating in the survey. In particular, female drinkers were likely to state that drinking alcohol led to behavior they regretted, and difficulties with controlling their emotions and muddled thinking. Overall, there was a lot stronger associated between using alcohol frequently and regret compared to use of marijuana frequently and regret.

Also, teenagers in this survey were more likely to report drinking alcohol directly led to difficulties with their relationships with significant others, friends, and peers.

Compared with using alcohol, the use of marijuana was more likely to be related to loss of interest in extracurricular activities, work, or interest in school. It was more likely for marijuana users to report having less energy and struggles with performing at work or at school.

Also, there was an association with using marijuana and problems with law enforcement. Teens who used marijuana frequently were 25 times more likely to report having difficulties with the police compared to alcohol users. A “frequent” user, for the purpose of the study, was defined as having used marijuana over 35 times. Users of marijuana were more likely to report that they faced social stigma compared to alcohol users, and viewed as a bad influence or as somebody who is involved with people who are bad influences.

Overall, female students engaging in the use of either marijuana or alcohol use were much more likely compared to male students who report some type of adverse outcomes. Students belonging to an ethnic or racial population were less likely compared to other students to report consequences that were negative, especially with alcohol use.
