Drug Fentanyl Overdose Victim’s Father Blames Dealers

A father of one of the overdose victims in Victoria said that drug dealers should be blamed for the suspected drug overdose deaths, and that the drug users should not be blamed for the deaths in the capital city. Debbie Porter, the daughter of Fred Lang, was found dead in an apartment that she rented in Langford, B.C. back on December 22. She was a frequent drug user, but she was also suffering with bipolar disorder.

It’s worth pointing out that the spate of overdose deaths have renewed the call for an injection site, which would be supervised. Not only that, but suspected overdose deaths is 8 per week in Greater Victoria. Furthermore, within the last 24 hours, Vancouver drug overdose deaths rise to four.

Asides from Debbie Porter, a number of others have died in the Greater Victoria Area, and the suspected overdoses are being blamed for those deaths. Lang said his daughter was seeking out treatment. He added that those who are dealing drugs are the ones who should be blamed.

Lang said the drug itself killed his daughter and it wasn’t his daughter who decided to administrate the drugs that caused her death. He also said that drug dealers should stop. He pleaded that they would just stop dealing drugs.

In the last 10 days, Porter is just one of eight people who have died of a suspected overdose. In two different incidents, two people have died, but they were not identified. Another victim is Brad John, whose body was discovered in a homeless camp.

Toxicology reports came back, but for one case. Officials believe that existing street drugs mixed with an opioid painkiller have been created. This means people who use the drug is putting themselves at an even higher risk of overdosing.

Since the deaths, more and more calls of supervised injection sites have been going on. An advocate for such sites, Darrin Murphy, said that drug users wouldn’t be found dead if such services were available to users, and those people would still be alive. Also, the painkiller, Fentanyl, have been the subject of alerts by various health officials in Great Victoria, as well as Vancouver and the surroundings area.

There is an injection site in Vancouver, and it’s called Insite, which the federal government oversees. It responded to to the calls by hinting that it is in favor of such service. This is in contrast to the previous government, which was not a fan of Insite.

Jane Philpott said in a statement that they believe in decision making that is based on evidence, and that such sites have the potential to reduce the dangers that come along with using drugs and abusing them. She also said that the sites potentially work when they are properly managed. The truth is it is too late for Lang’s family, but these talks do bring hope to those who suffer from drug addiction.
