Drug Opioid Interventions in BC and Alberta
An intervention goes above and beyond attempting to just talk to a loved one about getting help for their addiction. When it comes to understanding what is involved with an intervention, the most important thing to realize is that you cannot be both the interventionist and family member, you either have to be one or the other but not both. An intervention involves changing the family, and not complaining or talking to the alcoholic or addict. Alcoholics and addicts are usually comfortable with their active addiction due to certain things, places and people helping to keep them comfortable. So how will a speech do anything to fix that? It doesn’t matter how hard you try, it appears that most people cannot understand the science behind or grasp the concept of what an intervention truly is.
There have been so many times that a family has contacted us and asked us, “Why can’t we just talk to him ourselves, why do we need you?” Of course you can do that, however, if you have tried that already a thousand times and haven’t succeeded, then what is going to make things any different this time? What is even tougher is when we have a family member contact us and tell us that they talked to their loved one and he or she has agreed to go. That is great that the individual is going to treatment, however, nothing has changed within the family system. After they finish treatment they will be returning home to the same exact manipulated, unwell family system that they left behind and was keeping them comfortable, to begin with. That is why there is such a low success rate for treatment because families attempt to do an intervention on their own or never do an intervention at all or seek out codependency counseling for helping to repair their family system that the alcoholic or addict has broken.
Why A Professional Intervention Is Needed In Alberta And BC
As previously stated, you cannot be both the professional and the loved one. The alcoholic and the addict have trained the family system to keep them comfortable. It is at your expense and that is the part that is broken and needs to be repaired. The following are some things that you need to consider why a professional is needed and how an intervention should be done:
(1) Talking a loved one into going into treatment is NOT an intervention
(2) You need to either be the interventionist or the family members, but you cannot be both
(3) The alcoholic or the addict almost always views the family as being the problem
(4) You can never allow them to choose the level of care of treatment center
(5) If your enabling and codependency doesn’t change, their addiction won’t either
(6) What will you do when they are at treatment and call you wanting to go home
(7) You don’t need to wait until they’ve hit rock bottom or wait until they want to have help
(8) Dad can’t fix it with words and rules
(9) Mom can’t fix is with hugs
Until there is a united family system, that holds the loved one accountable and is on the same page, there is a good chance that the alcoholic or addict either will not accept assistance or following treatment will return to their active addiction. Addiction centers around blaming loved ones for problems and self-medicating emotions. The alcoholic or addict will go to extreme lengths in order to manipulate their family members into doing things to comfort them and help make their addiction even easier. You need to hire a professional to do an intervention because the family is what needs to change first. Until those behaviors that allowed the addiction to spiral out of control are changed, the alcoholic or addict will not change. Time after time we have had families tell us that their loved one doesn’t want help, but that is not true. They don’t need help because their family is providing them with all the comfort that they need so that they don’t need to stop what they are doing and seek treatment.
