Every day in Alberta and British Columbia teenagers use alcohol and/or drugs for the very first time. For some, tragically this initial experimentation with teen rebellion may turn quickly into a serious alcohol and drug addiction. If you are the father, mother, friend, sibling, counselor, or teacher of a teenager who is struggling with alcohol addiction and drug abuse, then you are familiar already with the pain and devastation that teenage addiction comes with. If a teenager you love is throwing away their life due to an addiction to drugs or alcohol, an intervention might be the answer that you have been searching for.
If you are worried about the behavior of your teenager or are unsure of what comes next, give Options a call and discuss your situation with a counsellor.
It is never too late or too soon to get help for your teenager.
You might be wondering if it's "Too Early or The Right Time" for staging an intervention on a teen. If you have conducted any preliminary research on addiction treatment or addiction, then you are probably familiar with the concept that every drug addict needs to "hit rock bottom" before she or he will accept help. Although there is some truth to that, here at Options, we strongly believe in the concept of "raising the rock bottom." So, therefore, an interventioni might be the event in the teenager's life that lets the teen know that it is enough and that things do not need to continue getting worse before they start getting better.
At times you might be tempted to dismiss a severe problem as being just a "phase" that the teen will grow out of eventually. Addiction is serious business and breaking your own denial barrier is critical to getting your teenager the help that she or he deserves. If your teenager is exhibiting any of the following behaviors, then she or he might have a problem with alcohol or drugs:
a) When confronted, denial of the problem
b) Sleeping a lot more or less than usual
c) Irrational anger and increased irritability
d) Increased isolation from their family
e) Sudden changes in peer group or friends
f) Drop in grades
g) Problems with authority
h) Showing sharp mood swings or signs of depression
i) Problems at school
j) Missing or skipping school
Whether or not the teenager in your life is engaged in behavior that is mildly rebellious or is showing more serious symptoms of alcohol and drug addiction, it's never too early to plan an intervention. Here at Options, we are here to assist you with determining the appropriate course of action to take for your teenager and family. From family counseling at the pre-intervention phase to getting your teenager into treatment, we can help you and your entire family each step in the process.
